WeCount! was initiated as a program of WeCare of South Dade, a coalition of social service providers, in 2002, and became an independent organization in spring 2006.

WeCount!’s members are Latino/a and Mayan immigrant workers and working families, Haitian immigrant workers and working families, and youth.  Our members work in plant nurseries and farms, landscaping, construction, tourism and housekeeping, and industrial shops, and are retirees.  They include families and recent immigrants separated from their families in their home countries.

WeCount!’s accomplishments include:

·         a resolution passed by the Miami-Dade County Commission supporting driver licenses for undocumented immigrants (2005)

·         having prevented the school system from retaining 500 students at West Homestead Elementary based on the results of a single test (2005-2006)

·         been part of the leadership team that organized massive immigrant demonstrations in Homestead on April 10 (8,000-10,000 people) and May 1, 2006 (10,000 people)

·         defense of the rights of day laborers and an agreement by the Miami-Dade County Commission to fund a day labor center (2006)

·         successful campaign to the get the cities of Florida City and Homestead to pass pro-immigrant resolutions (2007).

WeCount!’s methodology includes leadership training, community-building activities, and organizing campaigns for change.

WeCount! Youth is a local network of young volunteers, whose purpose is to help and hold our public schools accountable for quality education for all students and neighborhoods, regardless of backgrounds, identities, immigration status or cultural difference.

The WeCount! Community Worker Center is a non-profit center for day laborers in southwest Miami-Dade County, supported by Miami-Dade County and private foundations.  Its main function is to match willing workers with employers, including businesses, contractors and homeowners, seeking short-term labor.  The Center supports the human rights and dignity of day laborers and the creation of harmonious relationships between day laborers and the surrounding community.
